One of our personal favourite crops to grow every year is always strawberries. Nothing and I mean nothing, beats the taste of a fresh homegrown strawberry on a summers day. But, how can you grow the best summer strawberries this year? Read through our top tips to find out how!
Be Prepared
Being prepared is a necessity for growing the best summer strawberries. You need to have your area prepared ready for the strawberry planting season. You do not want to plant your seeds too late that your strawberries do not grow in time.
Some of the items you will need to be prepared include: strawberry seeds, soil/a place to plant them, watering can, water source, and netting.
Weed-free Zone
For your strawberries to grow the best they possibly can, you want them to be growing in a weed-free zone. Weeds are known to grow much faster than other plants and crops, meaning they will soon eat up all the nutrients that your strawberries need. Removing weeds as soon as you see them will give your strawberries the best shot.
Choose Your Spot Carefully
When growing strawberries you must choose the growing spot carefully. You want to choose an area in your garden that will give your strawberries the best chance. The ideal spot for strawberry growth is somewhere that is weed-free, and in the most sunlight. Some people will even grow their strawberries in hanging baskets as this will give them their own area, removing the risk of weed growth.
Remember Your Netting
As soon as your strawberries start to bud, you want to cover them with netting. This is a vital part of your growing the best summer strawberries. The netting prevents pests from eating your strawberries before they are ready. Speaking from experience, the birds will soon grab them at the first sign of growth. So keep them safe by covering them with some netting.
