If you’re looking to grow a beautiful lawn that’s green, thick, luxurious and soft on the feet, then you need to begin the process by purchasing high-quality topsoil. Topsoil is the material that’s placed on top of another soil, typically for growing grass seed and other plants. Topsoil may also be referred to as “turf builder.”
Topsoil is so important because it provides the necessary elements for thick, green turf growth such as nutrient-rich organic matter; vital minerals; organic acids; beneficial microbial life; an increase in soil micro-organisms and worms – all working synergistically to provide a bountiful environment for plant growth.
It should be noted that not all topsoils are created equal and if you want your lawn investment to pay off by producing a luscious, verdant carpet of thick grass, then you need to begin with quality ingredients. When considering the purchase of topsoil, be sure to inspect it closely for contaminants.
During the first pass through the soil with a rototiller, care should always be taken not to overwork soil that is moist since this can cause tensile stress on your new lawn, or “scalping.” A second or third tilling of the soil will incorporate air into the mix adding oxygen to decompose organic matter more effectively.
Harvested turfgrass has been compared with several forms of compost in order to determine which one makes for the most viable medium for growing turfgrass, including peat moss and cultured manure. When these various materials are used as part of a blend with sandy loam soils, they provide ideal conditions for healthy root development. At the top of the list is sand, which makes up 70 per cent of any soil. Sand provides drainage and aeration, allowing water to percolate through easily while oxygen fills the spaces between sand particles, providing root growth conditions similar to those in nature (where turfgrasses grow on sand dunes). Compost was found to be the second-best for helping these roots flourish because it balances organic matter with sand. The third most effective component of growing media is peat moss, which adds organic material but lacks sufficient sand for proper drainage.
To cut a long story short, you need quality topsoil before investing in turf. Topsoil is an excellent soil additive for improving the quality of soil on any given plot of ground and is ideal for levelling out uneven surfaces in your lawn. Topsoil delivers nutrients and minerals to your plants, fruits, and bushes so that they may flourish and grow into healthy, happy plants. With healthy soil, you’re able to store and process more water. Poor quality, depleted soil, won’t hold water and will make it impossible for your plants to thrive and survive!
Good quality topsoil is the ideal ingredient for making your lawn look lush and green, with plenty of rich nutrients to ensure healthy growth throughout the year. Topsoil contains essential minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, helping plants grow strong and healthy roots.
